An interactive language learning app focused on the power of flashcards and repetition

Memory Bank: A Passion Project for Lifelong Learning

Memory Bank is a labor of love, born from personal experiences and the shared goal of creating something meaningful for language learners. What started as handwritten flashcards taped to a wall has now evolved into a fully functional app that's available now in the app store.

This app isn’t just about learning words—it’s about understanding the science of memory, engaging users in meaningful ways, and making learning a new language enjoyable. As the sole designer of the app, I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come, and I’m excited to share this with the world.

The Inspiration Behind Memory Bank

Learning a new language is a deeply personal and often challenging journey. For me, it started with writing down Spanish words and taping them to my walls as visual reminders. My partner, who learned English through repetition techniques, saw the potential to transform these methods into a digital tool that could help others.

Together, we brainstormed how to take our real-life experiences and translate them into a user-friendly app. We wanted to create something that wasn’t just functional but also personal—a reflection of how we learn best. Our process involved asking key questions:

• What makes language learning stick?

• How do we build a tool that caters to different learning styles?

• What features would truly benefit users in retaining information over time?

These questions guided us as we began designing Memory Bank, ensuring that every element of the app served a purpose.

Building the Memory Bank: Learning Meets Science

One of the app’s standout features is the Memory Bank, inspired by research on memory retention and the “forgetting curve.” This feature allows users to review words at the exact moment they’re likely to forget them, creating a structured and effective learning environment. By incorporating repetition in a way that feels intuitive and rewarding, the Memory Bank ensures that users retain their vocabulary over the long term.

We also considered how to make the learning experience more immersive. While we initially explored integrating cultural and geographical references for each language, we ultimately decided to focus on the universal concept of memory as the foundation. This approach allowed us to create a clean, cohesive design while keeping the user experience front and center.

From Concept to Reality: A Designer’s Perspective

As the sole designer on this project working only with my partner - the sole developer - I’ve had the incredible privilege of shaping every aspect of the app’s visual identity. From initial sketches to polished mockups, the journey has been one of constant evolution. Our early concepts were ambitious and exploratory, but over time, we refined our ideas into something both beautiful and practical.

Designing Memory Bank taught me the importance of balance—creating an app that is visually engaging without overwhelming the user, and ensuring that every design choice serves a functional purpose. From the bold, colorful interface to the seamless navigation, every detail was crafted with the learner in mind.

A Tool for Connection and Growth

Memory Bank isn’t just an app—it’s a way to connect with others through the shared goal of language learning. Whether it’s someone tackling their first Spanish word or reviewing advanced French phrases, the app is designed to meet users wherever they are on their journey.

This project has been a deeply rewarding experience, blending creativity, technology, and a passion for lifelong learning. I’m thrilled to see Memory Bank take its place in the world, and I hope it becomes a valuable tool for anyone looking to learn and grow.
